Day 20 Summary

Logrono
98kms ( this takes us to 1586kms!!!)
1325 vertical metres( even more than crossing the Pyrenees and a double decker bus short of Ben Nevis!)
Mechanicals: Lawrie not being able to select his lowest ratio ( kicking it may not have been a good idea)
Medical: nil ( hill fatigue doesn't count)
Misadventures nil
Wine 100+
Cup: Geoff nominated John...seconded by all ...for carrying extra gear when the hills loomed longer and larger

Great to stay in Pamplona ...enjoyed the vibrancy at night but we now know it takes about an hour to get out of these bigger cities the next day .People were really helpful though...we only had to look vaguely confused and they would offer directions. A lot assumed we would be doing the Pilgrim trail so we had to put them straight . Although it is past the season for Pilgrims there are still a lot around...some clearly struggling with heat, lack of fitness, too much gear and blisters. The Camino here is just a dirt track next to a very busy road. I hope for their sake it gets better.
Today was a day of long hills and heat ...supposed to be only 23 degrees but sure it was hotter. We climbed more today than yesterday so are looking forward to 2 nights here. The only compensation was that there were some fast long downhills and we virtually had the road to ourselves.
Olive groves and grape vines but the grape vines were left bushy...nothing like the Bordeaux vines.
Enjoying the Spanish food...savoury morning teas instead of pastries. We had lunch at Estella...food is cheaper in Spain so looks like we will be swapping picnics for bar lunches ...a good chance to retreat from the heat.
Logrono is a surprise ...didn't plan to stay here but looks promising , busy and full and loads of character. Easy day planned for tomorrow exploring the Rioja
